Students can get sick with flu and schools may act as a point of spread, where students can easily spread flu to other students and their families. So far, with 2009 H1N1 flu, the largest number of cases has been in people between the ages of 5 and 24-years-old.

As a result, DHH health and medical experts, along with colleagues at the Louisiana Department of Education and local school districts, have planned and prepared a series of tools and resources for school administrators, teachers, parents and students to help fight the flu.

Guidance

DHH medical experts have compiled an Influenza 101 Guidance document to provide basic information to help school administrators and school-based health care staff to better understand and prepare for and prevent flu from entering and spreading in schools.

School nurses should also review our “Health Care Professionals” section to stay up to date on the latest guidance for health care professionals regarding H1N1.

Vaccination Campaign

School districts around the state have begun offering vaccinations for children at participating schools with parental consent. Schools have begun to send out informational packets regarding the H1N1 vaccine that include a H1N1 vaccine consent form which must be signed in order for a child to participate in a school-based H1N1 vaccination clinic. If a parent has all additional information regarding the H1N1 vaccination, including the Vaccine Information Sheet, and has misplaced the consent form, they may download a copy of the consent form below. If a parent has not received any information regarding the H1N1 vaccine from their child’s school, please contact the school for all required information.

Lesson Plans

DHH has worked with the Louisiana Department of Education to help teachers across the state teach elementary-aged kids about symptoms of the flu, how to help fight the spread of the flu, and other important tips for staying healthy. K-5 teachers can download full lesson plans from this site, including activity and writing sheets. By working together with local school districts, teachers, and parents, we can all help our kids fight the flu. Click here for Lesson Plans page.
