Although the 2009 H1N1 virus continues to circulate in our state, nation and world, it is no longer necessary to test every suspected case. The CDC now recommends a return to “routine” influenza testing and surveillance, which means DHH’s state laboratory is now only testing severe cases of influenza-like illness (hospitalized patients) and suspected cases from our “sentinel network,” a small group of participating physicians and hospitals around the state that test patients with ILI.

Louisiana doctors, nurses and other public health professionals should consider the possibility of 2009 H1N1 influenza virus infections in patients with febrile respiratory illness.

If 2009 H1N1 flu is suspected, and the patient is hospitalized, the clinician should contact their local Louisiana public health office or lab or the Central State Public Health Lab.
